Yes, you CAN borrow a pet!
Pet lending libraries have become popular on the East Coast, and in Japan. The purpose of a pet library is to allow children (with parental permission, of course), adults, and families to ”check out” a pet for as little as a week and as long as three weeks. Pets can be "renewed" with by contacting MPAC. As long as there are no waiting lists for the pet you are borrowing, the lending period is open ended.
If you have wanted to foster a pet, but can’t make the commitment, if you are thinking of adopting a pet and are unsure if a pet is right for you, or if you simply want the love and companionship of a pet for a little while, this program is for you!
The ultimate goal is to increase our pets, visibility, and to help them find a forever home. Making an informed decision helps. Not having to choose a pet and agree to adopt him or her for better or worse appeals to many people, particularly if your lifestyle is hectic and you are not sure how a new pet will impact it.
The added benefit is that there is NO PRESSURE to keep this pet. It is a temporary arrangement unless you decide to adopt. Potential owners may decide "yes, I do want to adopt a pet, however, this pet is not right for our family, maybe a cat would be better for us, or maybe a different pet with a different personality would be a better fit."
Sometimes adopting a pet is great; sometimes “checking out” a pet makes more sense.
(Applications to “check out” a pet must be approved, as in adoption applications.)
Our Pets may also be checked out for classrooms and 4-H projects. The period you are borrowing the pet for will be extended to accommodate the school or 4-H schedule.
How borrowing a pet helps everyone!
Pets are like people. Sometimes personalities clash, sometimes they click. By borrowing a pet, you are able to determine which type of pet is a good match for you, and if adding a pet to your life is a good idea.
Borrowing a pet gets the pet into a home, more socialization, and another set of eyes to observe the pet’s behavior and learn their personalities. They are getting the attention they need, and they are being loved and cared about in the process. It’s a win-win for everyone.
MPAC adds pets to our library that we feel have outgoing, stable personalities. They may be older, not as “pretty” as some other pets, they may have some physical issues, or they may have been with us for a long time and need that extra attention.
If you would like to get a pet library card, fill out an application. The fee is $45.00 per year and entitles you to check out pets for that year, for as little as a week to as long as three weeks. The pet can be “renewed” at the end of 3 weeks if there is no, waiting list for that particular pet.
The yearly fee is deducted from the adoption fee should you choose to adopt a pet within that year. Current borrowers have first dibs on adoption!
